London
NW1 4RY
Tel: +44 (0)20 7722 3333 (24-hour information line)
Situated in the heart of London, on the north-eastern corner of Regent's Park, is London Zoo. Founded in 1826, this is one of the world's most famous zoos and was opened to the public in 1847. Home to over 12,000 animals, the zoo has sought to redefine itself as a place whose prime purpose is to save species under threat of extinction. The daily 'Meet the Animals' shows give vistors an opportunity to learn more about the animals from their keepers.
Boasting many striking architechtural features, the 1930s modernist, spiral-ramped, concrete penguin pool is actually registered as a listed building. Among many world firsts, the zoo opened the first reptile house (1849), the first public aquarium (1853), insect house (1881) and children's zoo (1938) and continues to evolve, with the striking 'Web of Life' centre opening recently.
