Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column - london,
Trafalgar Square
London
WC2N 4JJ
One of London's grandest architectural set pieces, Trafalgar Square was designed in 1820 by John Nash. As one of the few large public squares in the city, it has been a popular tourist attraction and the main focus of political demonstrations for over a century.
In 1838, Nelson's Column was added and became the square's central focal point. The famous, large bronze lions followed some thirty years later and the fountains weren't actually added until the eve of the second World War, when they were a really unusual feature for that time. Trafalgar Square is often full of pigeons and at Christmas time, is graced with a giant Christmas tree covered in fairy lights, donated by Norway.
